Hello! We are Photo Studio Palette Asahikawa Store.
Pre-wedding location shoots in Hokkaido are incredibly popular, offering couples the chance to capture lifelong memories against the backdrop of Asahikawa, Biei, and Furano’s magnificent seasonal landscapes.
When preparing for a wedding photo shoot, it is completely natural for the spotlight to fall on the bride’s dress fitting and hair and makeup. However, many grooms often wonder, “What exactly do I need to prepare?” The truth is, a groom’s proactive preparation can make or break the success of the photo shoot! Today, we are sharing 5 essential things every groom-to-be should prepare to ensure a spectacular and smooth location shoot in Hokkaido.

1. Grooming: Haircuts, Skincare, and Facial Hair

To elevate the final look of your photos, establishing a solid grooming baseline is absolutely crucial.
Haircut: It is best to get your hair cut 3 to 7 days before the shoot. Trimming it the day before or on the actual day can sometimes make your hair look a bit too stiff or unnatural, so give it a few days to settle perfectly.
Eyebrows & Beard: Simply tidying up your eyebrows will instantly give your face a sharper, more refined look. Make sure to either clean-shave your beard or, if you are sporting facial hair, trim it neatly to a uniform length.
Skincare: Even if you do not typically use skincare products, start moisturizing your face with lotion and cream about a week before the shoot to ensure a healthy, glowing complexion.
2. Undergarments and Socks to Match Your Attire

Generally, grooms are expected to bring their own undershirts and socks to wear beneath their tuxedo or traditional Japanese kimono (Wasou).
Undershirt: Opt for a plain “U-neck” or “V-neck” shirt (in white or nude tones) so that it remains completely hidden beneath the collar of your dress shirt.
Socks: Depending on the color of your tuxedo and dress shoes, please prepare mid-calf socks in either solid “black” or “white.” (Avoid ankle socks!) If you are wearing traditional Japanese attire, you will be wearing split-toe Tabi socks, so you will only need a deep V-neck undershirt (or a specialized Kimono undershirt).
💡 Pro-Tip for Hokkaido Location Shoots
Because Hokkaido’s vast nature experiences drastic temperature changes depending on the season, dressing appropriately underneath your suit is highly recommended! Wear cooling, moisture-wicking undershirts in the summer, and thermal, heat-retaining undergarments (like HEATTECH) during spring, autumn, and winter.
3. A Seasonal “Survival Kit” for Outdoor Shoots

Stepping out of the studio and into the wild means adapting to the natural environment. If you can swiftly pull out a helpful item to assist your bride during the shoot, you will definitely earn some major brownie points!
Summer Shoots: Body wipes, cooling sprays, sunscreen, and bottles of water with straws (so the bride doesn’t ruin her lipstick).
Winter & Chilly Shoots: Adhesive body warmers, a large shawl or blanket to drape over the bride’s shoulders between takes, and hot drinks in a thermos.
4. Practice Smiling & Share Your Vision

We hear it all the time: “I get so tense and my face freezes up when a camera is pointed at me!”
Smile Practice in the Mirror: Just taking a few minutes to practice lifting the corners of your mouth will make it much easier to produce a natural, relaxed smile on the big day.
Share Your Vision Together: Discuss what kind of vibe you want before the shoot. “Let’s try this pose!” or “I want to use this specific prop!” Share these ideas with each other, and please don’t hesitate to communicate your wishes to our Palette Asahikawa staff and photographers!
5. Health Management and a “Fun-First” Mindset

Finally, the most important ingredients are perfect physical condition and a positive, upbeat mindset.
Go Easy on Alcohol and Salt: Heavy drinking or eating salty foods the night before is the main culprit for a puffy face in the morning. Hold back just for one night, and make sure to get a full night’s sleep.
Escort Your Bride: Walking around in a voluminous dress or a heavy traditional Kimono is far more exhausting for the bride than you might imagine. Please offer a gentle escort—offer your hand over uneven terrain and help keep the hem of her dress out of the dirt!
