Hello from Photo Studio Palette!

Choosing a shiromuku photoshoot in Japan is a beautiful way to celebrate your love while embracing elegant, centuries-old traditions.

The pure white shiromuku kimono is undeniably stunning, but because it consists of multiple heavy layers, many of our international brides wonder: “What exactly am I supposed to wear underneath?”

Don’t worry! We are here to guide you through everything you need to know about bridal undergarments for traditional Japanese kimono.

Let’s make sure you feel just as comfortable as you look beautiful on your special day!

1. The Basics: What the Studio Provides

First, take a deep breath—you don’t need to buy a full set of traditional Japanese undergarments!

Most professional photography studios will provide the specialized items required. This usually includes the hadajuban (a cotton undershirt) and susoyoke (a wrap slip for the lower body), or a modern one-piece kimono slip.

Your kimono dresser (kitsuke-shi) will expertly layer these over your own basic undergarments to protect the exquisite silk of the shiromuku and keep you comfortable.

2. Essential Items to Bring Yourself

While the studio handles the traditional layers, you will need to bring a few basic items to wear directly against your skin. Here is your essential packing list:

Deep U-Neck or V-Neck Top:

The back of a bridal kimono is styled to elegantly dip down at the nape of the neck (called emon wo nuku).

To ensure your undershirt doesn’t peek out from the back, choose a top with a very deep neckline in both the front and back.

Lightweight Shorts or Leggings:

For ease of movement and comfort, we highly recommend wearing soft, seamless shorts (like bike shorts) or thin leggings under the kimono slip.

Seamless Underwear:

Opt for seamless panties in a nude or light color to avoid any visible lines.

3. Creating the Perfect Kimono Silhouette

Unlike Western wedding dresses that highlight your natural curves, the ideal silhouette for a Japanese kimono is straight and cylindrical.

This means your regular push-up or underwire bras will actually work against you!

Pro Tip:

Leave the wire bras at home.

Instead, wear a simple, non-wire bralette, a soft sports bra, or a specialized kimono bra if you have one.

Your dresser will likely use soft cotton padding and towels to gently smooth out your curves and create that flawless, traditional shape.

4. Seasonal Comfort Tips for Your Shoot

Japan’s seasons are beautiful, but they can be extreme!

Since you will be wearing multiple layers for your shiromuku photoshoot in Japan, tailoring your undergarments to the weather is the secret to a happy shoot.

Spring & Summer (May – September):

The humidity can be quite high. Bring moisture-wicking, cooling tops (like Uniqlo’s AIRism) to stay fresh.

Autumn & Winter (October – April):

If you are shooting outdoors in historic locations or snowy landscapes, thermal wear is your best friend. Heat-retaining tops (like Uniqlo’s HEATTECH) are highly recommended, but remember—they must have a deep neckline so they don’t show at the back!
